Not everybody likes sitting in an office, some people learn and engage better when they are moving (kinesthetic learning style).
Clinical environments can feel intimidating or may be difficult to access. Being outdoors is available to everyone, it is a natural stress reliever and emotional regulator.
Outdoor nature-based therapeutic interventions have grown significantly in number and type in recent years. The shoulder-to-shoulder approach taken in outdoor therapy breaks down barriers to communication and can work well for many clients including neurodivergent individuals or where traditional therapies have not been successful.
Within outdoor therapy we understand the therapeutic value of contact with nature. Learning in the outdoors supports physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the main intervention used, it help individuals live and behave in ways consistent with personal values while developing psychological flexibility. Incorporating practical activities in nature leads to an increased sense of self-efficacy and can result in a shift in negative patterns of thinking.
Being outdoors has many psychological and physiological benefits - sunlight and exercise increases serotonin which can help regulate mood and levels of anxiety. In outdoor therapy we consider risks, goals, ability and confidentiality and develop a bespoke approach that works for you.
This term captures the relationship between people and the rest of nature. It is a measurable psychological construct that is relevant to well-being and the soothing- system. Increased nature connectedness has found to be associated with higher levels of positive mental health, happiness, and life satisfaction. At Mindworks, being outdoors is used to enhance the therapy and promote a deeper connection to nature, vital in keeping us emotionally, psychologically and physically healthy.
